paddle stool
The paddle Stool all started when one day my Aunty came over and asked if I wanted to jump on the waka for Waitangi. And I said yes.
So we were just learning as we were going along, learning the paddle. My Uncle was teaching us.
It was an awesome day to be on the sea rowing.
When I was asked to design the paddle stool based around the waka by AKAU.
I was thinking it could be good to do something different, bringing something from rowing on the waka and incorporating it into furniture.
The curves, straight lines and patterns of the hoe tell a story of which person used which hoe and of our ancestors. The paddle stools represents this by the way it is put together, not using any nails or screws, just like the waka. Back then they didn't have screws or nails.
The curves and lines on the Paddle Stool also represent the traditional hoe which is curved on one side and straight on the other. That's so it goes through the water easily, it goes with the water, not against it.
I feel great about the Paddle stool being a finished product. It's a good thing to be proud of, helping to design furniture.
How it's come from an idea and being made into a comfortable stool.
I'd like to do it again!
